Church Membership

Why Does Church Membership Matter?

In an age where many churches treat attendance as optional commitment, we believe formal membership is a biblical and meaningful act — for you, for the congregation, and for the health of Christ's church.

📖
It's a covenant, not a consumer choice.

Scripture presents the church not as a service to attend but as a body to belong to. Membership is a public commitment to a specific congregation — to serve, to be served, to be held accountable, and to hold others accountable in love.

🤝
It places you under shepherds who will give account.

Hebrews 13:17 calls us to submit to our leaders because they "keep watch over your souls." Pastors and elders can only truly shepherd those who are committed members of the congregation. Membership means you have pastors, and they have you.

It's how the church has always functioned.

Throughout church history, Christian communities have distinguished between those who profess faith and are in covenant with a particular congregation and those who are not. This is not a legalistic formality — it is the ordinary structure of church life.

Interested in Membership?

If you are considering membership at EURC, we'd love to talk with you. The first step is simply to speak with one of our pastors. From there, prospective members go through a New Members Class covering:

  • Our doctrinal standards — the Three Forms of Unity (Belgic Confession, Heidelberg Catechism, Canons of Dort)
  • Our church order and how our congregation is governed
  • What membership vows mean and what they commit you to
  • The life and ministries of the congregation

Reach out to Rev. Christopher Gordon (gordon@escondidourc.org) or Rev. Angelo Contreras (contreras@escondidourc.org) to start the conversation.
